Wooden molds are typically designed to shape, support, or create product models from materials such as plastic, paper, cardboard, thin metal, or composite materials. Wooden molds have the advantages of low cost, ease of processing, flexibility in design and repair, and are suitable for experimental or small to medium-sized production runs. They are often machined using CNC, saws, chisels, or manually, depending on the required precision and production volume.
Hardwood: Such as oak, mahogany, beech… has high durability, good bearing capacity, and less deformation.
MDF or plywood: Suitable for temporary molds, low cost, easy to process but poor bearing capacity, easily affected by moisture.
Wood combined with metal: Some hardwood molds can be fitted with steel or aluminum plates in wear-prone areas to increase lifespan.
Ensure good material release: Mold details should be designed so that the wood does not get stuck and the product is easy to remove.
Thickness and structure: The minimum thickness of load-bearing parts should be ≥ 15–20mm (depending on the type of wood).
Rounded corners and grooves: Rounded corners help reduce stress on the wood surface, and grooves allow air or glue to escape, preventing the product from sticking.
CNC or manual machining: CNC is precise but more expensive; manual is flexible, suitable for small quantities.
Apply a protective layer: Use paint, wood oil, or wax to waterproof and resist wear.
Add wear-resistant lining: If the mold comes into contact with abrasive materials (such as plastic, metal), PTFE, aluminum, or steel plates can be attached.
Clean after each use: Remove dust, excess glue, and wood shavings.
Avoid moisture and direct sunlight: Store in a dry, well-ventilated environment.
Regular inspection: Check for cracks, wear, or deformation, and repair promptly to extend lifespan.
Advantages:

Lightweight, convenient to transport.
Disadvantages:
Shorter lifespan than metal molds.
Poor bearing capacity and heat resistance.
Easily deformed if exposed to moisture or strong impact.
